Not a great game, but good atmosphere and a different approach to the formula (if it even was a formula at this point) make it a fun enough romp. Still, it's a solid game and it makes for a fun, quick playthrough for a couple of hours.Ĥ: Metroid II (GB). The final Zero Suit part is also dumb and goes on way too long. Gone is a sense of discovery as the game holds your hand throughout. The very core of the game is just great.ģ: Zero Mission: It's decent enough, but what made Metroid 1 so good is completely missing from this: gone is the atmosphere, instead being replaced by ugly cartoon backgrounds. Even with its flaws, I like it better than all the others. Feels genuinely alien and has laid a fantastic blueprint for future games to build on. The issues are obvious, but it's the most oppressive game in the series. But none of them are even close to SM.Ģ: Metroid 1. Here's where it already gets hard because I dont think any of the other 2D Metroids are that great. Just everything is top-tier and I wouldn't change a thing It's crazy how great this game is in every way perfect controls (never been bested in a Metroid game), varied locations, great OST, level design. I really wanted to play through the Prime games, but I'm still holding out for a Switch release on those in the lead up to Prime 4.ġ: Super Metroid by a wide margin. Early on in the game it brings your exploration to a halt as you can't easily dispatch enemies without countering them, later after a few upgrades this becomes less of an issue but man the first few opening hours are rough.

Fusion - I wasn't wild about it at launch, but knowing it's linear nature now I was able to take it on it's own terms, it has wonderful atmosphere (which I think Zero Mission lacks) and some great boss battles.Zero Mission - While I think the atmosphere takes a hit it's a great remake with snappy controls (although personally I think I prefer Super Metroid's weighty controls).Even years later I thought I was carving my own path but I was still being subtly guided by the designers.

Super Metroid - the atmosphere is unmatched to this day, and the level design is superb.

I figured I'd join in and post my rankings.
